Putting a mating up for sale
Putting mating rights up for sale on one of your stallions. The window opens by announcing your quota of saleable matings: that is the ceiling for everything that follows.
It also handles your existing sales, listed at the bottom. So it is a stallion's commercial dashboard, rather than a mere form.
Creating a sale
Four fields, in order:
- Sell: the number of matings, within the limit of the quota. It is taken off the quota as soon as you save.
- Type of sale: Fixed price, Reserved or Auction. There is no “not for sale” here: to withdraw a sale, one deletes it.
- Deadline: from 1 to 30 days. Matings sell more slowly than horses, and a long deadline only costs you tied-up quota.
- Price for one, or minimum price for one for an auction. It really is a price per mating, not for the batch.
In a reserved sale there is also the player's nickname, which has to exist, and who receives a message with a direct link.
Sales in progress
The table at the bottom lists what this stallion has on the market: type, deadline, quantity, price. The type is clickable and opens that sale for changing.
Nothing stops you from having several at a time, of different formulas or not, as long as the total respects the quota. The New sale button starts again from a blank form without leaving the window.
What can be changed, and what cannot
On an existing sale, only the price stays changeable — and the recipient, if it is a reserved sale. The quantity, the type of sale and the deadline are frozen and displayed read-only.
To change one of those three, the sale has to be deleted and done again. The button is there, with a confirmation, and the deletion gives the quota back immediately — nothing is lost.
One exception on auctions: as soon as an offer has come in, the minimum price locks as well, and the deletion is no longer offered. As for a horse, an offer committed cannot be taken back.
The four refusals
- The quota is at zero: the window says so at the outset and offers nothing.
- The stallion is for sale: a horse on the market does not sell his matings.
- The horse can no longer sell matings: he is no longer a stallion — neutered, retired, not yet born — or he is no longer yours. The check is done again at the moment of confirming, and not only when the list is displayed: a list open for a while may be out of date.
- Quota problem: you are asking for more than the quota available at the moment of saving.
Setting a price
Two markers, since the game gives none.
The first is the market: Buy a mating shows what the others are asking, and for which stallions. Compare at comparable genetics, not at comparable record — a decorated stallion is not necessarily a good transmitter, and experienced breeders know it.
The second is the commission: 10 % of the price goes to the game, taken from you. If you are aiming at a net gain, it is that amount divided by 0.9 that should be displayed.
And one piece of auction advice: on a stallion whose market value you do not know, put one or two up for auction at a low minimum price. The result will give you the fixed price to ask for the next ones, and it is information nobody will give you otherwise.
